Odoo ERP System – Everything you need to know

If you’re looking for a modern, powerful, and flexible business management system that also fits within your budget, chances are, you’ve already come across the name “Odoo.” This open-source ERP platform brings together a wide range of business operations into one centralised system.

In this article, you’ll get a closer look at Odoo ERP: its features, pricing, and other key information you should know.

How does the Odoo system work?

Odoo ERP is built on a modular structure. This means companies can install only the applications they actually need. For example, a service-based business typically has no use for warehouse or manufacturing modules, so there’s no point installing those. But CRM, invoicing, and project management tools are essential. It’s important to note that companies can expand their system at any time, adding new apps as their needs evolve.

Another key advantage of Odoo ERP is its open-source nature. This allows businesses to develop custom solutions tailored to their unique processes, alongside Odoo’s standard modules. While custom development can be complex and costly, the flexibility it offers is a major benefit for organisations with non-standard workflows.

Leveraging these open-source capabilities, we’ve also developed our own Via laurea module suite, fully adapting Odoo to Lithuanian localisation, including Accounting, payroll, SAF-T, GPAIS, i.VAZ, and many other solutions, required in the local market.

Standard Odoo Modules

With 46 core standard modules, the Odoo programme covers a wide range of business operations, including:

  • CRM and sales - lead management, sales pipeline, quotations, orders, integrated email, phone call logging, etc.

  • Inventory and warehouse - stock levels, warehouse structure, lot/serial numbers, reservations, shipment tracking, etc.

  • Purchasing - purchase requests, orders, vendor management, price lists, supply planning, etc.

  • Manufacturing (MRP) - production orders, routing, cost tracking, material requirements planning, quality control, etc.

  • Finance and accounting - invoicing, bank reconciliation, tax reporting, multi-currency accounting, financial statements, etc.

  • E-commerce and website - online store, product catalog, payment integrations, SEO tools, etc.

  • HR (Human Resources) - employee records, contracts, leave management, time tracking, payroll sheets, etc.

  • Project and service management - projects, tasks, time tracking, service invoicing, etc.

All modules can be added and adapted as and when needed. This flexibility makes Odoo suitable for both small businesses and large enterprises.

An ERP system’s core goal is to centralise all business processes and data in one platform, replacing the typical mix of separate, unrelated tools used for different departments.

You can find more detailed information about Odoo’s core standard modules and their features by visiting this page.

Odoo Implementation - what are your options?

The Odoo ERP system is available in two main editions: Odoo Community and Odoo Enterprise.

Odoo Community is free and open-source, but it comes with a limited feature set (for example, it lacks full accounting capabilities and the Studio customisation tools). It also does not include official support, so all updates and hosting are completed by you.

Odoo Enterprise, the paid edition, offers the full range of advanced system features, unlimited customisation options, and official Odoo support. As certified Odoo partners, we work exclusively with this version.

Odoo hosting

Companies can choose where they want to host their business management system. The main options are:

Odoo Online (SaaS)

  • Hosted directly in Odoo’s cloud.
  • Automatic updates, security patches, and no server maintenance required.
  • Limited customisation capabilities.

Odoo.sh

  • Odoo-managed hosting with Git integration and separate dev/stage/production environments.
  • Odoo handles server maintenance and administration.
  • Ideal for deploying custom modules, integrations, as well as collaborating with an Odoo partner.

On-Premise (own infrastructure)

  • Odoo is installed on your own server (physical or private cloud) or on Odoo partner’s server.
  • This option offers the highest level of control, but also the most responsibility, as server maintenance, backups, and overall performance must be managed internally.

Odoo pricing

The total cost of acquiring Odoo ERP consists of three main components:

1. Licenses (Odoo Enterprise)

Odoo Enterprise license prices vary depending on the country, number of users, and chosen hosting method. Annual billing offers a lower rate, and you also receive a discount for the first 12 months. You can find exact pricing on the official Odoo Pricing page.

2. Odoo implementation and partner services

The project cost also includes Odoo implementation and related services provided by official certified Odoo partners. The price can vary significantly based on your business size and specific requirements (whether the standard Odoo system is sufficient or if you need custom features).

To ensure maximum price clarity and transparency, Via laurea offers fixed-price implementation plans:

  • Odoo Starter - 3700 EUR
  • Odoo Essentials - 7000 EUR
  • Odoo Scale - 16000 EUR
  • Odoo Bespoke - Price depends on required customisations.

These plans already include consulting, system configuration, training sessions, and more. A detailed plan comparison table is available on our Odoo Implementation and Development page.

3. Hosting

Hosting costs depend on your chosen hosting method and system needs (server capacity, number of users, etc.).

With Via laurea implementation plans, the first year of hosting on our servers is free. After that, hosting prices start from €20/month.

You can also calculate Odoo.sh hosting prices directly on their official pricing page.

How does the Odoo implementation process work?

The Odoo implementation process and the exact steps involved can vary quite a bit, as each Odoo partner follows their own methodology. Here’s what the process looks like if you choose Via laurea:

Initial consultation

During the first consultation, we get to know your company and discuss your needs and expectations for the business management system. We also present Via laurea’s implementation principles.

If everything sounds good, we’ll ask you to complete our business requirements document, which helps us gain a deeper understanding of your processes and specific pain points.

Odoo DEMO presentation

Using the information from your requirements document, we prepare a personalised DEMO presentation. In this presentation, we showcase the standard Odoo system and demonstrate how it addresses the needs you’ve outlined.

At this stage, we also determine which of our implementation plans is the best fit for your business requirements. If our proposed solutions meet your expectations, we’ll send you a commercial offer.

Kick-off meeting

Once the contract is signed, we’re ready to begin! A dedicated project manager is assigned to your implementation, and we schedule a kick-off meeting with all key stakeholders. During this session, we define everyone’s responsibilities and create a clear, structured project plan.

Weekly meetings and project work

Following the agreed plan, we proceed with the implementation. Each week, at pre-arranged times, you’ll have online meetings focused on analysing specific business processes (with plan Scale), system configurations, training sessions, and addressing other project-related questions.

Go-live and ongoing support

After all project tasks are completed, the system is fully prepared for use! Once implementation is finalised, clients can choose to transition into our Odoo Support plans

The overall duration of an Odoo implementation project, of course, depends on its complexity. However, with our fixed-price plans, the system can typically be deployed as soon as within 1-2 months.

Who is Odoo suitable for?

The Odoo business management system is suitable for an exceptionally wide range of companies. It’s highly adaptable and can grow alongside your business. Small and medium-sized companies can start with the basic modules and expand their system over time, while large organisations can tailor this powerful platform to meet complex, industry-specific requirements.
